If you go to www.google.com and search on "tax preparer" or "tax preparation services", dozens or even hundreds of possibilities will appear for your eyes! There are the chains. There are CPA's, EA's and tax attorneys. There are so many businesses that provide tax services, what's a taxpayer to do? You should do two things: 1. Follow the advice in my article "How To Find A Good Tax Preparer In 5 Simple Steps" and get out and meet with at least 2 potential tax preparers that have been referred to you by family, friends or co-workers. 2. When you meet with these prospective tax preparers, ask them if you can take them for a "test drive". See if they are willing to demonstrate their expertise by doing a review of your prior year's tax returns, federal and state, personal and/or business. You provide a copy of the returns. He/she takes a week or two to do the review, then you meet with him/her again to discuss your returns and to see if he/she has any suggestions on how to reduce your taxes and /or overlooked tax deductions. In other words, give him the opportunity to actually do something for you before you take the plunge and actually pay him to do something for you. When you buy a car, you drive it before you buy it. When you hire a tax preparer, you should take him for a little test drive, too. It only makes sense, doesn't it? I provide this prior year tax return review as a free service to all prospective clients. In fact, I will review up to 3 years' worth of previously filed returns, and meet with you for up to an hour (in person or on the phone) to discuss your returns, offer tax-saving recommendations, and answer any tax questions you may have.
