5 Critical Questions
You Must Ask Before Choosing A Tax Preparer

1. How many years experience do you have?
Obviously, the longer he's been in this business, the better. If he's just starting out, do you really want to entrust your tax return to a rookie? Think about it.

If you have a health problem and need a specialist to diagnose your condition or perform a potential life-saving surgery, who are you going to want in that operating room?  Someone whose never done this before, or a veteran?

Of course, preparing your tax return is hardly a life and death situation. But we are talking about an important part of your financial life and material well-being. Don't take this task lightly.  It's not as easy as it looks. The rules of this tax game change every year, and you need a tax pro who's been doing this for years.

2. Tell me the actual number of tax returns you've personally prepared over the years?
Now we're getting rather specific about this experience question. If someone has been in the business for 10 years, but has only prepared 100 returns during that time . . . hmmm . . . do the math – that means he's only done about 10 returns each year.  Hardly enough to qualify as a seasoned veteran.

3. What happens if you make a mistake on my return?
Now, any good tax preparer will have a guarantee. At a minimum, his response should be "I'll make it right at no additional charge."  In other words, if he messes up your return, he should do whatever is necessary to fix it.  That could mean filing an amended return or writing letters to the IRS to resolve any problems, all at no charge to you.

Furthermore, a good tax preparer should offer a money-back guarantee.  "Total client satisfaction, or your money back."  That's only fair, isn't it?

4. Are you up on the latest technology?
Believe it or not, there are still tax preparers who do returns manually.  Tax software programs have been around for many years now, so if a tax preparer isn't doing returns on a computer he's living in the Dark Ages and you should take your business elsewhere.  Doing your return on the computer also means he can e-file your return, which is another service that you definitely need him to provide at no extra charge.  E-filing saves times, ensures accuracy, and is now mandatory for most preparers.

5. Do you only prepare personal returns, or do you prepare other types of returns, too?
If your prospective tax preparer only does personal returns, you should find someone else.  Over the course of your lifetime, you are likely to need someone to prepare any number of other tax returns, so it’s best to find a tax pro who handles them all. Otherwise, you’ll end up looking for another tax preparer as soon as a tax situation other than your personal return arises.

Many Happy Returns,
